See the results from our Graduation Night Out.
As you probably we know, last week we had the awesome opportunity to take four girls out in celebration of their graduation, as well as to get them some much needed items. Sam and I want to give a big THANK YOU to those who donated. You’re helping girls who virtually have nothing. When we began our trip last week we started by asking the girls what they needed. We soon found out that they needed, well, everything. One of the girls only had one pair of very worn out shoes. Another girl only had the pair of pants she was wearing. It was heartbreaking to think about a normal high school graduation celebration party in the US and to simultaneously see the need looking us straight in the eyes.
They seriously expected nothing from us, and would have been really happy to get such basic essentials. They live in the children’s home where toilet paper is a luxury. Sometimes they use regular sheets of paper cut up into little rectangles to take care of business. These girls know what it’s like to live simply. These girls thought we were going to buy them some shampoo.
Knowing how little they had and how big their hearts are, we wanted to give them just a little bit more than the basic essentials. Each girl got a decent pair of shoes, a pair of pants, and three shirts. In addition we got them shampoo, deodorant, and a couple other little things like that. Toward the end of the night we headed over to Papa Johns for some pizza and gaseosas (Pepsi and Inka Kola). The girls were so happy and grateful that they sneaked away to the “bathroom” only to return with ice cream for Sam and I.
What was the most important about this trip was not that we bought them things. It wasn’t important that they received gifts that they wanted. What made such a big impact on this day was that someone was caring for them, and we were there to laugh and bond and become friends. These girls know us now, and we know them, and they know that we love them. Every kid needs that. Every person needs that.
Since we didn’t actually get any donations prior to the event, the donations we received will be going toward our next day out. Be sure to check it out and get in on the fun. I can’t express how amazing all these kids are.
