Skinny Bitch or Just a Fat Guy?

I spent most of my life being fat. I don’t mean I was a few pounds over weight. I mean man boobs fat. I got super fat as a kid starting around 8-ish. There’s pictures of me when I was about 6, happy, skinny, healthy, but something went horribly wrong. I gained a lot of weight. I was really healthy otherwise until I was in my early to mid twenties, when other parts of me started to go. I started getting arthritis, colitis, heart murmurs, crippling back pain.

My mom found this tv show called, “Know the Cause” hosted by Doug Kaufmann – a seriously informed citizen. He has a way of eating that he recommends to people and has people on that have tried his recommendations and had great success. So we tried it and I had great success! I went from 300 lbs down to 235 lbs, but not only that all of my other problems dried up and went away. Since then I’ve not had any of those symptoms return. I’m thirty-two years old while I’m writing this, nearly a decade of not having any major issues.

Since then I’ve put some weight back on, currently I’m sitting at about 248. I’m comfortable here, but I am definitely trying to lose a bit more. I spent 6 months with a personal and I’m in great shape now, I just have some poundage to drop and skin to tighten up. Recently I’ve been using myfitnesspal, a website and app that allow you to track what you’re eating so you can focus on where you’re putting your calories. It helps me focus on what I’m actually eating, like is the majority of my food healthy, raw, vegetable based, or is it meat, dairy, sugar, and grains?

Sam has doing a cleanse called, “The Whole 30.” I really commend her for doing it; it’s rough. Let me tell you. I haven’t been doing the cleanse with her, but in a sense I really have. It’s not like we’re going to cook two separate dinners, and we don’t really keep anything in the house that’s unhealthy anyway, so for at least part of this cleanse I’ve been doing it with her.

Once you understand what food is, eating healthy is actually really easy and tasty. Food is anything you can digest that doesn’t adversely affect your body. For instance, vegetables are food. Oreos are not. It’s really kind of common sense. Another example of food is what I had for dinner the other night. Pan seared chicken breast cubed, half an avocado, and roasted Brussels sprouts halved. Delicious. Healthy. Food. Good balance of fat, carbs, and protein.

    When I first read this I was thinking no way was sam 300lbs! I didn’t know you blogged here too! Great post! It gives a lot of inspiration to eat healthy… Especially the picture of your dinner. Yes please! Looks delicious!

      He just started blogging here! That’s why I wanted to call the blog “A He & A She”. I wanted to blog about our combined happenings as a married couple, but I wanted us to both talk about other things in our individual lives as well.

    I am intrigued by Brussels sprouts. I need a recipe or some tips though. The only time someone has cooked them in my presence, they were stinky and they had the consistence of rubber.

      Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Put some olive oil on the bottom of a baking sheet. Cut a good-sized portion of brussel sprouts lengthwise. Place them on the baking sheet and move them around with a spatula so they get some oil coverage. Sprinkle some salt. Roast for 20-30 minutes, or until the top layers of the brussel sprouts have crispy edges. You should also be able to poke a fork through them. We typically move them around on the baking sheet halfway through cook time as well for a balanced roast. Cool and enjoy. They’re seriously so good. They taste great with diced sweet potatoes, fyi! Let me know if you give them another shot.

        ooooh, brussels! This family loves some brussels :)

        We take a different approach to cooking them which may make you think differently about brussel sprouts. My family and I, to include the youngsters – 6 and 3, think they are wonderful and could possibly eat them every day……however, our recipe includes chicken stock which could easily be replaced with vegetable stock, depending on your menu restrictions.

        Anyway, we wash up the brussels, sautee them in olive oil, throw in chopped garlic (a lot, thank you) and perhaps some slivered onion, season with pepper and a dash of coarse ground sea salt. When they are nicely browned, give them a douse of stock (chicken or vegetable) and let them soak that up on medium high for a few minutes. Love, love, love the brussel sprouts!
